Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

NHS England and NICE have approved the use of Tirzepatide, which you may also know as Mounjaro® or ‘the weight loss drug’, from primary care. You may well hear that Tirzepatide is available from primary care from 23rd June 2025. However, in the first two years entry criteria have been set by NHS England to a very small number of people. This is to allow safe entry of this repurposed medicine into the health system.

Please only contact us if you are eligible, this means you have a BMI of 40 or higher and at least four of these additional conditions, which will already have been diagnosed by your GP or another medical professional:

· Hypertension

· Dyslipidaemia

· Obstructive sleep apnoea

· Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)

· Type 2 diabetes mellitus

For eligible patients, Mounjaro will be available through a new service which is in the process of being set up.

Important information:

Contraceptive Pill / HRT

Recent guidance has suggested that Mounjaro may mean that the contraceptive pills do not work effectively. If you are using a contraceptive pill, please use condoms for four weeks after starting or altering your dose.

The guidance also suggests that weight loss injections may have an impact of the effectiveness of HRT to adequately protect the endometrium (womb lining). Please contact the surgery for an HRT review so that we can discuss potential alternatives.

Private Prescribing

Any weight loss injections that have been started by a private provider cannot be taken over by the GP Surgery.

It is the responsibility of the private prescriber to assess the patient and prescribe appropriately.

If the private provider requires medical information from the GP, please ensure that you have the NHS App so that you can provide the information to them yourself. If you are unable to do this then please contact reception who can provide you with a computer generated summary of your records.

Please see our leaflet about introduction of of Tirzepatide to support weight management for appropriate eligible patients (PDF).
